How the typing test works

When you start typing, the test compares each key you press against the passage on screen, one character at a time. The test divides your correct characters by five to convert them into words, then divides that by the number of minutes you have spent typing. Because only correct characters count toward the total, accuracy is already built into the number — a fast run riddled with typos scores lower than a slightly slower clean one. Accuracy is reported separately as the share of the characters you typed that matched the passage, rounded to a whole percent. Choosing a mode and text

Leave the test on Full passage to type a fixed block at your own pace, or pick a 1-, 2-, 3-, or 5-minute timer to benchmark yourself over a set window; in timed mode the passage keeps extending itself, so a fast typist never runs out of text before the clock does. The Text control switches between real sentences — with capital letters and punctuation, closer to everyday writing — and a stream of the most common English words in lowercase, which strips punctuation away for pure finger-speed drills.

What counts as a good typing speed

The average adult types around 40 WPM. Getting comfortably past 50 to 60 WPM usually means you have stopped looking down at the keyboard; 60 to 80 WPM is a solid, professional pace, and dedicated typists reach 90 to 100 and beyond. Accuracy matters as much as raw speed: aiming for 95 percent or higher keeps your effective WPM up, because every mistake you leave in drags the number down.
